Man killed after he's hit by drunk driver, gets out of vehicle

Sometimes, the worst results of a car accident come when it seems as though the accident has run its course. This is what happened in a car crash that took place recently on Interstate 287 in Bernards Township. A 25-year-old man was driving north when he lost control of his vehicle. The man's car spun out and traversed all three lanes of traffic, in the process hitting a car driven by a 49-year-old man.

The older man got out of his vehicle, apparently to see what had happened. Unfortunately, at that point, he was struck by a third oncoming car. The man was killed; his wife, who had been with him in the car, suffered minor injuries in the crash as well. The driver of the first car was charged with driving while intoxicated.

The accident took place at about 2 a.m. this past Sunday. In general, it can be very dangerous to exit a vehicle that has been involved in a crash on a busy highway. This is especially true in the overnight hours, when many drivers are not likely to expect to see a pedestrian on an interstate highway. Of course, in this case, the man would not have gotten out of his car had the initial accident -- allegedly caused by a driver who had been drinking -- had taken place.

The family who lost a loved one in this crash might choose to seek compensation from the negligent parties in this accident. Compensation can't bring someone back, but it can at least partially make up for the future income that person might have earned in his or her remaining working years.
