Woman injured after tow truck hits I-95 overpass

The New Jersey State Police reported a July 22 accident on I-95 that left one woman in stable condition after suffering serious injuries. The 1:30 p.m. collision beneath the Princeton Pike overpass in Lawrence Township involved a heavy-duty tow truck, the construction vehicle it was carrying and the injured woman who was driving a car near the truck.

According to authorities, the construction vehicle was positioned on a flatbed trailer behind the truck in a northbound lane when it hit the underside of the overpass, causing the machinery to fall off of the trailer. According toa statement by authorities, the construction vehicle struck the car belonging to the injured woman, a 43-year-old resident of Bordentown, when it fell from the trailer bed.

The woman was receiving treatment for her injuries at Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton. Authorities stated that the driver of the truck was uninjured, and engineers determined that the overpass sustained no structural damage.

When a heavy-duty commercial truck loses its cargo, the consequences of a resulting car accident can often be far more severe than those apparent in this case. A failure to adequately consider a piece of heavy machinery's effect on a truck's ability to stay within vertical clearance limits can have disastrous results.

A truck driver and the driver's employer can be held accountable for ensuring that a commercial vehicle with heavy freight is ready to safely traverse its route. Investigators' findings that efforts to minimize the height of cargo were neglected could hold significance for an attorney building a plaintiff's case, as could driver logs indicating that a truck driver failed to account for vertical clearance concerns on his or her route.
