3 dead after New Jersey crash

In October, prosecutors concluded that a driver who was believed to have caused a fatal accident in New Jersey was speeding and was distracted at the time the collision took place. The crash occurred on Aug. 19 in Freehold when the driver of a Volkswagen Jetta crossed into the oncoming lanes and collided with another car.

The driver of the Jetta was a 19-year-old male who had a 20-year-old female passenger. He reportedly first crossed over into the fast lane and began veering into the slow lane when he collided into a vehicle driven by a 50-year-old man. The driver of a third vehicle was unable to stop before becoming involved in the accident.

The young driver and his passenger were killed as well as the driver of the second car. The driver of the third vehicle survived. Prosecutors determined that the young driver did not have alcohol or drugs in his system at the time the accident occurred. Additionally, while the report stated that he was distracted, no cellphone was found by investigators.

There is always the possibility that the driver who caused a car crash will not survive. If the negligent driver caused the death of another person, the family members can still hold the responsible driver's estate liable for their loss and for the damages that they directly sustained. In these cases, a lawyer may help prove that the other deceased driver was operating his or her vehicle in a negligent or careless manner. If that driver is found liable, the family members may potentially receive compensation for losses, including funeral expenses and lost income.
