3 killed in New Jersey Turnpike accident

Three people died because of a car accident on the New Jersey Turnpike on Jan. 22. The one-vehicle crash occurred at about 7:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the Turnpike near Cherry Hill Township.

New Jersey State Police said that a Jeep Grand Cherokee left the roadway and struck some trees after its driver apparently lost control of the vehicle south of Route 70 near the Walt Whitman Service Plaza. Emergency first responders said that the people inside the Jeep were trapped by the wreckage. Personnel indicated over emergency service scanners that two of the Jeep's occupants were dead at the scene of the accident. Emergency first responders pronounced the third occupant, a passenger, dead shortly after 8:10 a.m.

Reports indicated that much of the southern part of the state had seen snow and ice overnight. None of the victims were identified in reports. No other vehicles or people were involved in the crash. New Jersey State Police were still investigating the crash at the time of reports. The right southbound lane of the New Jersey Turnpike was closed at the scene of the accident for several hours, causing major traffic delays.

People who get into the passenger seats of vehicles trust that the drivers at the wheel will drive sensibly and with caution, particularly when winter hazards such as snow or ice are present. The families of fatal car accident victims often have trouble with the bills accompanying sudden deaths, particularly in the face of emotional loss that results from the death of a loved one. Some families consider seeking compensation from the estates of deceased negligent drivers for burial expenses and other damages after fatal accidents.
