Fatal car accident statistics

A recently-published article has shown that New Jersey residents have a relatively low chance of dying in a car accident compared to people in other states. New Jersey comes in at number three on a list of the states where residents are the least likely to die in an auto accident.

According to 2013 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are about 6.3 car accident deaths per 100,000 people in New Jersey. In Montana, where residents are the most likely to die in a car accident, the auto-related fatality rate is 23.3 per 100,000 people. The District of Columbia has the lowest auto accident death rate at 4.6 per 100,000 people, and the national auto accident death rate is 10.7 per 100,000 people.

The article also compared the national auto accident death rate to that of other causes of death. Statistics show that people in the United States have a one in 77 chance of dying in a car crash and the same chance of dying from a firearm. Heart disease kills one in four people, and alcohol and drugs kill one in 34 people.

When a person is killed in a car accident, the surviving family members will often suffer significant financial losses in addition to the grief of suddenly losing a loved one. Funeral and burial costs are immediate and often expensive, and in many cases the survivors will have to make do without the financial support that the decedent provided. If the fatal accident was caused by the negligence of another driver, a personal injury attorney can assist in seeking applicable damages through a wrongful death lawsuit filed against the at-fault motorist.
