Volvo says car-related deaths may soon be thing of the past

According to Swedish automaker Volvo, all of its vehicles will be "death-proof" by the year 2020, making the roads of New Jersey and other states much safer. The company believes that the adoption of self-driving cars and the increased use of other advanced safety technologies will be major factors in reducing auto fatalities.

Volvo has long collected crash data on its vehicles to improve safety features in its new car models. By analyzing this data, the automaker believes that safety technologies can be combined in such a way that auto-related injuries and deaths are eliminated. For example, adaptive cruise control is already available on many vehicles. This system allows drivers to set a maximum speed and then uses radar and automated braking to ensure the vehicle maintains a safe distance from vehicles in front of it. This system can be modified into a full collision avoidance system by programming it to take control of the vehicle if the driver doesn't react to oncoming hazards quickly enough.

Volvo and other automakers are also starting to use lane assistance systems, which use cameras to ensure a car doesn't drift from the road. Such a system can be made more comprehensive by using the same cameras to spot and avoid pedestrians and animals that wander onto the roadway. Of course, the most comprehensive safety system may be the self-driving car, a technology that Volvo, Google, Ford and Tesla are all testing. Self-driving cars are completely controlled by advanced computers, and Volvo believes they will be the safest vehicles on the road.

While self-driving cars and other advanced safety features appear very promising, thousands of Americans are still injured in car accidents each year. People who have been injured in an accident caused by the negligence of another driver may want to meet with an attorney to discuss how best to seek compensation for their economic and non-economic damages.
