The more we know about what causes car accidents, the more we can do to stop them from happening.

These statistics come from 2014 data from the State of New Jersey Department of Transportation and The State of New Jersey Department of Law & Public Safety. Let's take a look at some of them:

  • Total number of crashes: In 2014, there were 59,408 accidents resulting in injuries in New Jersey. In 2014, there were a total of 521 crashes resulting in fatalities.
  • Hand-held vs. hands-free devices: There were 1,758 total crashes involving drivers using hand-held devices in 2014; There were 2,127 total crashes involving drivers using hands-free devices. The total number of cell phone-related crashes was 3,885
  • Cell phone-related crashes by county: Essex County had the most crashes related to cell phone use, with 893. Essex County is the third most populous county in New Jersey. Salem County had the fewest number of crashes related to cell phone use, with 11. Salem County is the least populous county in New Jersey.
  • All crashes by county: In 2014, Bergen County had the most crashes (32,771) followed by Middlesex County (30,193), and Essex County (28,112).
  • Motorcycle accidents: From 2009 to 2013, there were almost 13,000 accidents in New Jersey involving motorcycles. In 2013, 31 percent of motorcycle drivers involved in accidents tested positive for alcohol consumption.

There is a lot motorists can do to help prevent accidents. By avoiding distracted driving and drinking and driving - and paying attention behind the wheel - we can all collectively play a part in making our roads safer.
