Wrongful death: When a drunk driver injures or kills a family member

Imagine a drunk driver hits and kills your husband who was riding his motorcycle. You will be devastated to lose your beloved so suddenly, but the knowledge that the loss could have been avoided will be the worst pain of all.

Unfortunately, it's not uncommon for a New Jersey drunk driver to take another person's life due to the reckless decision to get behind the wheel drunk. That's why stiff criminal laws exist to punish drunk drivers. It's also why surviving close family members will have the ability to pursue financial restitution and justice in court.

Example of a recent fatal drunk driving collision

Recently a 32-year-old man on a scooter was killed when a 42-year-old woman drove into him. The accident happened along Route 80 at approximately 6:52 p.m. in Montville, New Jersey. Police say that the woman was intoxicated at the time of the crash.

According to authorities both the man on the scooter and the drunk driver were traveling down Route 80 in the same direction. It's unclear how the collision happened, but the man was thrown from his scooter. Although emergency responders rushed to bring him to a local hospital in Denville, doctors soon pronounced him dead at the medical facility.

Did a drunk driver cause an injury or take a loved one's life?

These days there are a lot of options that drunk drivers have to get home after a night of drinking. They can call a taxi; they can call Uber and Lyft; or, they can ask a friend to take them home. They can even take public transportation.

There is no good reason to put other individuals on the road at risk by driving drunk. Nevertheless, every time you take to the road, you're likely to be driving alongside someone who's inebriated.

If you or a loved one was injured - or if you lost your loved one due to another driver's unconscionable decision to drive drunk - you can fight back for justice and financial restitution in court.

Although no amount of money, and no amount of litigation, will ever bring back the person you've lost, a successfully navigated wrongful death suit can be an important part of seeking closure regarding your loved one's death.

Similarly, a personal injury claim can help you move on following a drunk driving accident that resulted in injuries to you or a family member.
