New Jersey man dies after car submerged in lake

On Behalf of | Jul 22, 2014 | Commercial Vehicle Accidents

A New Jersey man died in a collision in Lawrence that sent his car into a lake on July 17. Police filed charges against the driver of the dump truck involved in the commercial vehicle accident the following day. Police charged the man with driving while intoxicated at that time, but that charge may be dismissed once they receive the results of a toxicology test.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Brunswick Pike and Lake Drive around 3 p.m. A 38-year-old man was driving a dump truck northbound on Brunswick Pike. A witness said that he was operating the truck erratically and at a high rate of speed when he rear-ended a sedan driven by a 59-year-old Trenton man. The impact sent both cars through a roadside guardrail and into Colonial Lake. The sedan was trapped underneath the dump truck and submerged in the lake. The sedan driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

An emergency crew transported the dump truck’s driver, a Westhampton resident, to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton to receive treatment of unspecified injuries. Police charged him with second-degree death by automobile, reckless driving, careless driving, failing to observe a traffic signal and driving a commercial vehicle without a proper license. He had only a basic driver’s license. The man’s bail was set at $250,000.

Surviving spouses, children and parents of deceased commercial truck accident victims often struggle with the trauma of losing a family member, especially when evidence suggests that their loved ones suffered before their death. Personal injury attorneys could advise families of the damages that they may be eligible to seek from the companies that own the vehicles involved in fatal accidents.
