Hit-and-run suspect located by Essex County Police

On Behalf of | Dec 11, 2014 | Auto-Pedestrian Accidents

Authorities with the Essex County District Attorney’s office reported that a man suspected of striking and killing a Nutley woman on Nov. 15 has been located by the Essex County Police. According to officials, the man is cooperating with investigators at this time.

Accident reports from the date of the incident indicated that the 77-year-old Nutley woman was walking across Centre Street at Ravine Avenue in a crosswalk. Witnesses to the subsequent collisions told investigators that a dark in color van struck the woman as she crossed the road. The van then continued on, reportedly fleeing the scene.

Police had offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the hit-and-run driver. Although authorities believe the man they are questioning is the suspect, he has not been charged or arrested for his role in the accident. It is unclear how the man was located. Police indicated the man owns a Ford Econoline van they believe was involved in the accident. The collision reportedly occurred during the day, around 12 p.m. The woman, who was found lying in the road by emergency responders, died the same day of her injuries.

When a person is hit by a motor vehicle in a pedestrian accident, he or she is more likely to suffer serious personal injury or even death than people who are passengers in cars. When a pedestrian is killed while in a crosswalk due to the negligence or recklessness of a motor vehicle driver, the family of the person who is killed may be able to hold the driver liable by filing a wrongful death lawsuit against him or her. A personal injury attorney can help the family by identifying all possible defendants and claims and filing the complaint on their behalf.
