These road trip driving safety tips may keep you safer

There is no better feeling than planning a summer road trip. It doesn't matter where you're going or who with whom you're traveling, heading out on the highway is sure to put a big smile on your face.

The more time you spend behind the wheel, the greater chance there is that you could be involved in an accident. This is why you need to exercise extreme caution on your next summer road trip.

Here are six things you can do to enhance your overall level of safety:

  • Get plenty of sleep before you hit the road. This is important, as you don't want to find yourself driving while drowsy. If you feel like you need a break, pull to the side of the road and get some shut-eye.
  • Stay hydrated. It may not sound like a big deal, but a lack of hydration can zap your energy and put you to sleep. You need to stay hydrated, even if it means taking more breaks along your route.
  • Take breaks. Even though you want to reach your destination, stopping to rest and stretch is a great idea. This gives you time to rejuvenate your body and increases your level of alertness.
  • Avoid distractions. As the miles go by, boredom may set in. Even so, you should never fall prey to distractions when you're behind the wheel.
  • Sit up straight. This maximizes blood flow, prevents cramping and allows you to breathe more easily.
  • Let your passengers know that you need to concentrate. As much as you would like to turn around to see what your children are doing in the back seat, this is a mistake. Your passengers should never distract you when you're driving.

These road trip driving safety tips can help you avoid trouble on the road and keep you and your family safer on your summer vacation.

If you are involved in an accident due to the negligence of another driver, you should call 911 and wait for help to arrive.

Once you receive treatment, learn more about the cause of the accident and what you can do to protect your legal rights and hold the negligent party responsible.
