A 33-year-old resident of New Jersey who was working as a conductor on a derailed Amtrak train has filed a lawsuit against Amtrak for serious injuries he claims to have suffered in the fatal accident on May 12. The man was on a break to use the restroom when the incident occurred. His injuries from the crash include broken shoulders, a broken back and a broken neck.
According to the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, many changes need to be made to improve trucker safety. Such changes include anti-collision technology, better hours for truckers and better regulation of companies with high accident rates. These are among 100 recommendations that the NTSB says have been ignored despite fatality rates increasing over the past several years.
An accident on the New Jersey Turnpike in the morning rush hour left 10 people injured on Dec. 17. An investigation into why the crash happened is ongoing, and no charges have been filed as of the time of this report.
Despite initial assurances from Wal-Mart that they would take full responsibility for the New Jersey accident that injured Tracy Morgan and killed a passenger in the limousine in which they were riding, a responsive filing by the retailer in the federal lawsuit partly blamed both Morgan and the other injured passengers for failing to wear their seat belts. The filing was made in response to a federal lawsuit initiated by Morgan in July following the fatal crash that occurred in June.
Around 4 a.m. in November 2012, a 61-year-old man was in a parking lot at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. At the same time, a driver for Academy Bus Lines was preparing for his day of transporting passengers between various parking lots and airport terminals. On his way through one parking lot, the bus driver reportedly struck and ran over the victim.
On Aug. 27, a dump truck traveling east on Interstate 280 in New Jersey crashed into several other vehicles, one of which burst into flames, killing all three occupants. According to police, the accident happened around 10:30a.m in East Orange.
Last week, we wrote about the accident on the New Jersey Turnpike that killed one man and critically injured several others, including comedian Tracy Morgan. The accident came about when a tractor-trailer rear-ended a luxury bus that was transporting the group from a performance in Delaware. While the accident received attention because of the celebrity of its victims, it was hardly a unique event on the Turnpike.
Any motor vehicle accident has the potential to be dangerous. Heavy metal vehicles that crash into one another at any speed, and if those vehicles are traveling at a high rate of speed, the results can be catastrophic.
