5-car rear-end collision kills woman, injures 2 others

On Behalf of | Jul 13, 2016 | Car Accidents

According to media reports, a five-vehicle collision that happened in New Jersey on July 1 claimed the life of one woman and injured two others. The accident happened in west Caldwell at the intersection of Passaic and Fairfield Avenues around 8:30 a.m. when a line of cars was stopped at a red light.

Law enforcement authorities report that a vehicle crashed into the back of the line of stopped cars. A 33-year-old Caldwell woman was transported by emergency personnel to Patterson for treatment at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The driver who was at fault in the accident was also injured, sustaining back and neck injuries. Also injured in the crash was a West Caldwell police officer. He was transported to the hospital to be medically evaluated. The driver has not yet been charged for causing the accident. Law enforcement agencies are working together on the investigation, including members of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the West Caldwell Police Department.

Several different factors can lead to a person’s failing to stop when traffic ahead of him or her is stopped. Drivers who are distracted by cellphones or other devices may end up causing serious rear-end collisions when they are unable to stop in time. When a person is killed in such a car accident that was caused by the negligence of another driver, the surviving family members may want to meet with an attorney to discuss the advisability of seeking compensation for their losses through the filing of a wrongful death lawsuit against the at-fault motorist.
