How can children avoid dog bites?

On Behalf of | Jan 14, 2022 | Animal Bites & Attacks

It is up to dog owners to control their pets and prevent them from causing harm. While many pet owners are extremely responsible, it only takes one negligent person to cause serious injuries.

Additionally, many dog bite victims are children. As a result, parents must teach their kids how to avoid possible issues. Here are a few things your child can do.

Approach pets carefully

Children are naturally curious about pets they see out in public. Make sure yours understands they should always ask the owner for permission before approaching the animal. If the owner says the dog is friendly, the child should approach carefully and allow the animal to sniff their hand. If the pet reacts in a friendly manner, the child can pet the dog.

Know the signs of aggression

Dogs often indicate they are about to attack through body language. Dogs will appear tense when they feel threatened. They may bare their teeth or growl as the child approaches. These are clear signs that the dog does not feel comfortable, and that the child should not approach it under any circumstances.

Remain calm when faced with a dog

In the event a child encounters an unrestrained dog, they must remain calm. They should keep their distance from the animal and refrain from looking it directly in the eye. If the animal approaches, the child should back away slowly.

If a dog bites your child, seek immediate medical attention. Dog bites carry a high risk of infection, and your child might need a tetanus shot. When visiting the doctor, provide as much information about the dog and its owner as possible, as this is necessary to determine the rabies risk.
